DAVE "Burnsy" BURNS

I believe it was the Fall of 1977 when by some strange twist of fate Dave Burns found himself looking for a room at 58 Ellen St.. As a pledge and then as a Brother, Burnsy was a first round draft choice. I think he lived at the house for his entire stay at Oswego where he played Soccer and lacrosse. In fact, I also think that to this day there is still a Dave Burns Memorial Lacrosse game played every year. A fitting tribute. Burnsy was our goalie on an undefeated Zeta Hockey team one year. He was an Iron Man with a choir boys face. When it came to partying he could have been Vince Lombardi. He could go all night and then get up and run it off on his way to practice! I miss his smile, I miss his laugh, I miss the way that lil' guy could outdrink me. To this day Burnsy is my inspiration, at this age I'm one of the oldest guys I know who lifts at the gym weekly. When I'm tired or my motivation is down I just think of Burnsy and get back in there with the young guys, he gives me the energy, he gives me the strength. At his funeral Dennis Morrissey said of Dave " He captured the energy of a small child." I invite you to share that energy and keep his memory alive........get off your ass....Burnsy would.

I lived with Burnsy at the aforementioned 58 Ellen Street..was all of 18 years old, a relative pup - the Fall of 1980, he was in his last semester. He and Hooks had been keeping the house together on a shoestring though the spring and summer (they were the only two that lived there)and a flood of brothers moved in that fall. Needless to say, I learned a lot in a short amount of time. That guy would force you to engage-and keep up with- just about anything that was going on. He was a good guy. I liked the Vince analogy, but Knute Rockne comes more to mind. This guy had more going on than a circus, and could party like a freaking Viking. The minute he walked into a room the atmosphere changed, especially if you, (or maybe you and an army) appeared to be “relaxing”. Let’s just say it wasn’t his way. I think if Burnsy were alive, he would say: Get off your ass, because life is a lot shorter than you think it is.

Burnsy was a really great guy who was always there to help anyone who needed a hand and yes, at one point he was one of the only brothers who was living in the house and keeping ZXZ from losing it. He stood for brotherhood more than just about anybody i can think of.

Burnsy was a great person and a great brother. He was the kind of guy you always wanted to be around. I’m going to have a beer later and toast him. He would like that.
